Salma Hayek


She is counted as the first Mexican national to be nominated for a Best Actress
Oscar and not only known for her sole physical beauty, bringing a fiery presence
and striking, dark-eyed beauty to the screen, but most of all for her exceptional
acting career. This versatile actress was born on 2nd September, 1966 in
Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico to her Lebanese father, Sami Hayek, an oil
company executive who once ran for mayor of Coatzacoalcos and her Spanish
mother, Diana Jiménez Medina, an opera singer and talent scout who inspired
her to take initiate into the world of acting. In Arabic the meaning of her first
name is "safe”. She grew up in a very religious Catholic family with "really strong
values," played a large role in her childhood. She was sent to a Louisiana boarding
school at the age of 12 but after getting into trouble for terrorizing the nuns,
she returned to Mexico and was eventually sent to Houston, Texas, to live with
her aunt, where she stayed until she was 17.There after she moved to Mexico
City, where she studied International Relations as a university student, but, to
the chagrin of her family, decided to drop out in order to pursue a career as an
actress.

She was dated actor Edward Norton between 1999 and 2003 and then Josh Lucas
in 2003. In 2007, she confirmed her pregnancy with fiancé PPR CEO François-
Henri Pinault but on July 18, 2008, they announced the end of their engagement.
They later reconciled and were married on Valentine's Day, 2009 in Paris.

In 1989 she soon landed the title role in "Teresa”, a hugely successful soap opera
which garnered her the star status and explore her talent and passion.

She appeared on "Street Justice” in1991, "The Sinbad Show" in 1993, "Nurses" in
1991, and as a sexy maid on the HBO series "Dream On" . She also had one line
in the Allison Anders film Mi vida loca (1993). In 1995 Robert Rodriguez and his
producer wife Elizabeth Avellan gave her big break for the role in Desperado with
a brief role which put her on Hollywood's map. In From Dusk Till Dawn, in which
she performed a table-top snake dance.

Hayek had a starring part opposite Matthew Perry in the 1997 romantic comedy
Fools Rush In. In 1999, she co-starred in Will Smith's big-budget Wild Wild West,
and played a supporting role in Kevin Smith's Dogma which was a lukewarm hit,
and Hayek that led her to continue in both commercial and artistic films such as:
Breaking Up in 1997 with an unknown Russell Crowe; 54. They were impressive
but didn't do much at the box-office. In 1998 about the rise and fall of the
legendary New York club; Dogma in1999, playing the muse in a somewhat odd
comedy co-starring Matt Damon and the biggest box office hits blockbuster Wild
Wild West.

Her production company "Ventanarosa" produced the 1999 Mexican feature film
No One Writes to the Colonel, which was shown at the Cannes Film Festival and
selected as Mexico's official Oscar entry for best foreign film.
In 2000, Hayek had an uncredited acting part opposite Benicio del Toro in Traffic.

In 2001 Chris Rock; In the Time of the Butterflies on television, the small artistic
film which won Hayek an ALMA award as best actress. In 2003, she reprised her
role from Desperado by appearing in Once Upon a Time in Mexico, the final film of
the Mariachi Trilogy.

People will never forget her performances in After the Sunset, opposite Pierce
Brosnan, Ask the Dust opposite Colin Farrell and Robert Altman's "Paint" and
Bandidas.

It finally happened in 2002. Frida (2002), co-produced by Hayek, was a beautifully
made film overflowing with passion and enthusiasm, with terrific performances
from Salma and Alfred Molina as Kahlo's cheating husband "Diego Rivera". With
her role she disappeared into her subject so convincingly that not only would she
return to the good graces of critics, but was nominated for six Oscars, including

best actress for Hayek. In the same year expanded her horizons, directing The
Maldonado Miracle which was shown at the Sundance Film festival

Already established herself as a high-profile movie star, Hayek expanded her
horizons, reunited with Robert Rodriguez for a humorous cameo in "Spy Kids 3-
D: Game Over" and ... reprised her role in the successful and entertaining third
outing in the El Mariachi series "Desperado 2: Once Upon a Time in Mexico,"
which hit the theaters in 2003.

In April 2007, Hayek finalized negotiations with MGM to become the CEO of her
own Latin themed film production company, Ventanarosa

She was an executive producer of Ugly Betty, a television series, a guest
appearance on another popular female-helmed comedy, "30 Rock” in 2006
and in 2009 she returned to film in an adaptation of a popular children's book
series, "Cirque du Freak" in 2009, in which she played a bearded woman in a
traveling freak show.

As a singer she performed performer in three movies- in Desperado for the song
Quedate Aquí, in Frida the Mexican folk song La Bruja with the band Los Vega
and Siente mi amor, which played during the end credits of Once Upon a Time in
Mexico.

• Other Interests

She associated with for Avon cosmetics, Revlon. She mo0deled for Chopard, La
Doña, a watch by Cartier. She launched her launched her own line of cosmetics,
skincare and haircare products called Nuance by Salma Hayek, to be sold at CVS
stores in North America. Her grandmother who used to make her own facial care
products, inspired to create a cosmetic line.

She also supports charitable work for increasing awareness on violence against
women and discrimination against immigrants. Being the global spokesperson

for the Pampers/UNICEF, she worked to help mothers in developing nations
worldwide, teaming up with Pampers and UNICEF to help stop the spread of life-
threatening maternal and neonatal tetanus.
