Vidya Balan


Our very own Vidya “Bidya Bagchi” Balan – the unique combination of Glamour
and creativity was born on 1st January 1978 in Palghat, Kerala to her father P.R.
Balan, is the Vice-President of ETC Channel and her mother is a home-maker.
She grew up with her elder sister, Priya, who is married to Kedar. When she was
very young, her family relocated to Mumbai and used to stay at Road No. 11, near
Ambedkar Garden, Chembur. She completed her schooling from St. Anthony's
Convent School, and thereafter she graduated in Sociology from St. Xavier's
College. She then went on to pursue a Masters degree in Sociology from Bombay
University. Her parents always encouraged her to pursue her career in acting
obviously after completing her education.

She also studied and performed in Prithvi Theaters' workshops. With her sister
Priya, Vidya learned Carnatic dance form during their early childhood days, but
she opted out as the dance classes took place early on Sunday mornings and as
she is not an early riser. Her proficiency in Tamil, Malyalam, Hindi, English and
Bengali help her in film career.

Her performance:-

• She soon started work on her MA from Mumbai University when she was
offered a role in a Malayalam film starring her favorite actors- Mohanlal,
but it was later put on hold mid-way that made her to wait for some more
years before her movie debut.

• After deciding to turn to TV advertising, she made her TV debut, most
of which have been Pradeep Sarkar’s directions. Now we can see her to
promote for the brands Nihar Natural oils and Horlicks.
• After couple of months, She appeared in three music videos directed
by Pradeep Sarkar for Pankaj Udhas, Euphoria, and Shubha Mudgal in
supporting roles.

• In the later seasons she also appeared in two TV serials Ekta Kapoor's 'Hum
Paanch', portraying the character of Radhika Mathur and Ashok
Pandit's 'Hanste Khelte'. As she wanted to make a career in film,
refused Anurag Basu's offer to star as the lead of a television soap opera.

• In the year 2003, she was signed up for a Bengali film titled Bhalo Theko
which was a Goutam Halder direction, opposite Joy Sengupta for which
Vidya won an Anandalok Puraskar for the Best Actress.

The turning point of her life came during 2006 approaching by Vidhu Vinod
Chopra during a pop-concert in Mumbai to play a lead role in 'Parineeta', opposite
Saif Ali Khan.She was chosen for this role40 screen tests and 17 make-up shoots.
Her hard work and awesome performance was highly praised by the critics &
earned her the Best Debut (Female) Filmfare Award and nomination for the Best
Actress Filmfare Award. She won Stardust Awards for the Superstar (Female) of
Tomorrow for the film.



• The performance in Lage Raho Munna Bhai, as Jhanvi alongside Sanjay Dutt
(actor) in a blockbuster movie won her praise by the critics, as the movie
became the 2nd highest grossing movie for that year.

• Her role in Mani Ratnam’s Guru was highly appreciated and the movie did
well.

In the year 2007 her performances in Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute To Love,
Eklavya: The Royal Guard, Heyy Babyy & Bhool Bhulaiyaa were noteworthy and
appreciated. Eklavya was chosen as the official entry by India into the Oscars for
the 80th Academy Awards and Filmfare Award for the film Bhool Bhulaiyaa.

• In the year 2009, as a young & independent gynecologist also the single-
parent who struggles with a 12year son, who suffers from the Progeria
syndrome in the film Paa, turned her into a bonafied star and earned her
the Best Actress Filmfare Award & the Best Actress Star Screen Award,
amongst other awards.
• In 2008 the films Halla Bol, Kismat Konnection did well.
She got her exposure in the drama titled Ishqiya (2010) alongside Arshad
Warsi & Naseeruddin Shah. Her blazing looks & tragedic eyes were touching &

restrained. She won Zee Cine Awards for this film got nomination for the Readers’
Choice for the Best Actress for the film Ishqiya.

• Vidya “Bidya Bagchi” Balan proved through her ‘Kahaani’, that an actress
could carry the film on her own. The roles in No One Killed Jessica, The Dirty
Picture in 2011 and Kahaani in 2012 gave her status as one of the leading
contemporary actresses of Hindi cinema. She was honored with National
Film Award as Best Actress for the film The Dirty Picture.
• Her Laavni item number in Ferrari Ki Sawaari was fabulous.

Her devoted fans are waiting for the comedy film she just has signed,
Ghanchakkar by Rajkumar Gupta, opposite Emraan Hashmi. After Bhalo Theko
and Kahaani she wants to do more Bengali film especially with Rituparno Ghosh
and Aniruddha Roychowdhury.

Recently she has worked for the brand Horlicks to support that nutrition is a basic
need. She also spread her hands for supporting education for young Indians by
promoting children's' books; is associated with Americans for Aids Research;
with Hale House - that provides support and housing for children born with HIV
and drug abuse; as well as hosting forums and attending events for Harvard
Aids Institute. There are some whisper in media that she is dating Siddharth Roy
Kapoor the head of UTV Motion Pictures and was seen holidaying with him in
Goa.
